The Community Peace Drum at Dragonfly Cove
This community drum, Sweet Dreams, is connected with the GrandMother Drum International Peace Project. She is one of 21 community “mother drums” throughout the world using the drumbeat to join local communities in gathering for peace and honoring Mother Earth. The drum is a symbol of the heartbeat of love that connects all cultures and races.
There is growing research confirming that sound can be a powerful source of healing. The drum as an instrument has a language of its own which transcends race, religion, and nationality. It has the power to heal the individual body, mind and soul while also unifying with the world community.
Our Mother drum, which was made in Alaska, is three foot in diameter. The buffalo hide and maple drum is draped with miniature peace flags. Sweet Dreams in used in ceremony to celebrate the changing of seasons and other events honoring Mother Earth. She specifically works with healing the waters on the earth.
In April 2008, we drove to New Jersey to pick up the drum after an event with the GrandMother drum in Massachusetts. On the way home, we kept noticing a hawk seeming to follow the car. During the dedication ceremony that night, we learned that the hawk is the animal spirit of the drum. The hawk represents messages from spirit, clear sightedness, wisdom, courage, illumination, creativity and truth.
Drumming events are open to anyone in the community who chooses to be part of the healing message. All ages are welcome to attend. Drumming programs are available for schools and other community events. For additional information please contact Shirley Richardson at Dragonfly Cove.
GrandMother Drum Information
The Mission of the GrandMother Drum International Peace Project is to travel around the world as the international voice of the Whirling Rainbow Foundation. As a symbol of the heartbeat of love that connects all nations and all races, the GrandMother Drum promotes peace and unity through the global language of music, dance, cultural and healing arts.
The GrandMother Drum is a living, beating symbol from the hearts of the grandmothers that we are all one people, that Mother Earth is our one country, that love is stronger than fear and that peace and freedom are the birthrights of all humanity. The drum is the centerpiece of creating celebrations that honor the unique gifts and spiritual traditions of the diverse cultures of the human family with the theme: The Heartbeat of One Family, One Earth.
The largest drum of its kind in the world, the GrandMother Drum, seven feet in diameter, took over a year to construct, and has over 1300 strips of wood, two hundred crystals inlaid in its kettle base and is covered by one giant buffalo hide. All this combined produces a phenomenal sound that not only stirs the soul, but has a tremendous healing effect on the body. The resounding tone directs healing vibrations to the body’s energy field.
Our mother drum is a smaller version of this powerful GrandMother Drum. Additional information regarding the GrandMother Drum is available at www.whirlingrainbow.com.
